Uma Karuna Thurman was
born on April 29, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her mother, Nena
von Schleebrugge, was a Swedish model and psychotherapist and her
father, Robert A.F. Thurman, is the first American to be ordained
a Tibetan Buddhist monk and is also a personal friend to the Dalai
Lama. Uma and her three brothers were raised in the Buddhist faith.
Uma describes herself as a gangly and
awkward child who was mercilessly teased for her peculiar name as
well as for being ugly and weird. The family lived for extended periods
in India, Amherst, and Woodstock, New York, while the children were
growing up.
Uma was drawn to acting at an early
age and at fifteen, she moved to New York to study at the professional
Children’s School. For income, while waiting for her big break, she
worked as a dishwasher and a model. In 1987, she landed her first
leading role as a young vamp that seduces men to rob them in the low-budget
thriller, Kiss Daddy Good Night.
Since that time, she has appeared in
many movies, notably Dangerous Liaisons, in which she
played a virgin seduced by John Malkovich; Quentin Tarantino's incredible
film-noir Pulp Fiction, for which she received an Oscar Nomination;
and Kill Bill, also by Quentin Tarantino.

Describing herself... "Tall, sandy blonde,
with sort of blue eyes, skinny in places, fat in others. An average
gal."
"It is better to have a relationship with someone who cheats
on you than with someone who does not flush the toilet."
``To turn that which is your greatest fear and that which therefore
has the greatest tyranny over you into a mental exercise, whether
it be fantasy, whether it be a desire to be overpowered mentally
or physically or anything else, it's a way of taking control.''
